I'm a 17 year old student at Truro college. I've taken a photography course at the college and for part of our third unit we have been told to set up a blog and document our progress throughout the unit. the unit is called 'Play'. It's a Photoshop based unit which basically means the photos i will be uploading will be pictures i have taken and edited in photoshop. I'm interested in a wide range of photography genres such as sport photography, landscape, portrait... the list goes on. However this unit i think i'm going to base the photos i upload around portraiture; comparing photographed portraits to illustrated portraits, landscape photography; by taking lots of different landscape photographs digitaly and on film i hope to be able to compare the two styles,

Re-creating a masterpiece

On the left you see Erwin Blumenfeld's  1950 Vogue magazine cover. In them days editing software stretched stretched as far as paint and a paintbrush, nowadays on the other hand, we have access to incredible computer software such as Photoshop. My version of this image (right) was made for our  Unit 2 Re-creation project. I took my inspiration from Rankin's re-creation of Blumenfeld's image where he used modern tech to create a modernized version of the cover. Rankin went down the road of making the image a bit less serious by getting his model to cheekily stick her tongue out and lick her top lip. He also added the nostrils of the model into his version of the picture to fill a bit of the plain space left in the middle, this i liked, however the cheeky tongue i didn't think best to add into my re-creation as i wanted a formal re-creation with the twist of using modern technoligy such as digital cameras and editing, and high quality lighting equipment, whilst getting as close to Blumenfeld's original as possible. Which in my opinion i have done quite well for a days work.

Ma sink

These are two images from a shoot i did messing around with shutter speeds in my bathroom sink a few days back. This image on the left is a well timed drop of water hitting a filled sink. I edited it in Photoshop  for a few hours and ended up with this, the original is not far different from this image, by this i mean that no water or added splash has been added to the photo, only it has been made brighter and such things as reflections from the plug have been removed. I really like this image and take great pride in calling it one of my own.
This image is of water running from the tap in my bathroom. The image hasn't been edited in Photoshop, however i did touch it up on the crappy editing software that comes with Microsoft picture viewer called 'Fix'. (This is a default program on any Microsoft computer as far as i know) although it hasn't been edited "properly" as such, i do however like it very much as it is. in my opinion it almost looks like ice, the sparkles coming from the tap in the background are also very attractive to my eye, this was done using a very low aperture to create a low depth of field, blurring the background. I also much prefer the image in gray scale to the original because i feel that it gives more of that ice effect.
